Reflection

The two enactments foreground everyday inquiry and mathematical noticing in ways that feel playful, purposeful, and developmentally authentic. In Sink or Float, children predicted and observed material properties, then sorted items into sink and float categories. This supported early scientific reasoning while building the habit of testing ideas, consistent with EYLF Outcome 5.4, classifying and grouping, and aligned to ACARA Science through simple investigations.

The Shape Hunt shifted maths from worksheets to the environment. Children matched a drawn triangle to real world forms, strengthening symbol–object connections and vocabulary for geometry, EYLF 5.4 and ACARA Mathematics. Strengths included clear invitations, concise pacing, and accessible props. I modelled language for prediction, What do you think will happen, and for justification, How do you know it is a triangle, which prompted reasoning without over directing.

Next time, I would add child choice, selecting items or shapes, quick peer sharing moments, and a close that documents thinking, photo labels or a one line because caption. I would also prepare optional supports, contrast backdrops for water play, simplified shape cards, and home links, a find a shape photo challenge, to widen participation. These small refinements should deepen agency and transfer while keeping the experiences joyful, brief, and curriculum aligned.
